Florida’s biggest teacher's union, along with parents, have sued the state over its plans to reopen schools with in-person instruction. They say the plan is a violation of Florida's constitution, which requires schools to operate safely.

Teachers and administrators rallied against the reopening of schools due to health and safety concerns amid the COVID-19 pandemic.Middle school teacher Brittany Myers, stands in protest at the Hillsborough County Schools District Office on Thursday in Tampa, Fla.

The emergency order, issued this month by Florida Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran, says all school districts"must open brick and mortar schools at least five days a week for all students." The order says the final decision on whether to reopen schools rests with local superintendents and school boards. But it suggests funding may depend on it. The districts that submit reopening plans that are approved by the state will receive full funding.

In a lawsuit filed in Miami, The Florida Education Association joined by teachers and parents, says the Department of Education order defies recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on reopening schools safely. Besides Education Commissioner Corcoran, the lawsuit also names the Florida Board of Education, Governor Ron DeSantis and Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez as plaintiffs.

In a statement, Education Commissioner Corcoran called the lawsuit"frivolous" and"reckless," saying he believes the teachers' union"hasn't read nor understands" the emergency order. The order, he says, reiterates a Florida statute that schools requires to operate 180 days a year, which equates to 5 days a week for 36 weeks.

If nurses can wear PPE’s, why can’t teachers? We can’t keep paying school property tax with closed schools.

It’s simple: humans can live without education, and would die without food.

Of course!! 🤪. . RIDICULIUS!! When get their full salary, staying home and the parents have to stop working to help the 6-10 years old upload their PDS classwork on GOOGLE CLASS every day.... All on expence of the Families !! HOW CONVINIENT..!?

How is this hard to understand? No safety protocols with PPE and social distancing put in place=virtual learning. Kids have until 21 years old to finish school. They can always attend summer school, attend before and after school classes weekends programs and/ or repeat a grade.

So, none of these teachers are going to the grocery store I'm guessing? Or ordering stuff online that comes from a warehouse full of workers and delivered by a driver, or will visit a dr's or dentists office or any number of other people who are working and interacting w ppl.

It’s really not the teachers we have to be Worried about it’s mostly the kids who will keep taking their mask off doing class so to me, I will wait till this COVID-19 is slow down more before I take my kids back to school

Who's advocating for the students? Where's their union?

Can we look into bringing back textbooks from storage? It may help with the technology gap, offer variety during the day, cut screen time and allow older adults to help teach. Many subjects have not changed and I know I could use a math refresher!

Cool so these teachers want the ability to roll into the ER, docs office, etc, etc and expect us to be there. How exactly can we go work when we have to do your jobs?

Get back to work for the kids!

GovNedLamont is Gaslighting & says, ”There won’t be any COVID-19 testing or temperature checks required to return to school.” Schools closed in March! Keeping Kids Safe! NotMyChild My daughter is not their Guinea Pig!TrumpIsKillingUs KeepSchoolsClosed!

So wait, they won’t open the schools because it isn’t safe, but they won’t be told to wear a mask? 👍🏼

Nothing should be open in Florida with their Massive COVID-19 numbers

I live in Florida. No one is choosing to stay home. Businesses are as packed as they were before the pandemic. Why should schools and any business remain closed. As an American, we have the right to choose. People are not choosing to stay home. Schools need to reopen.

I’m glad the union is willing to take pay cuts since they won’t have to work as hard this semester. Good on them.

I'm a member of the FL teachers union and very disappointed they waited this late. I have had the benefit to be the age to retire early.

Maryc1850Sadler Communism at its finest, these are the people teaching our kids? The real numbers are not very confusing, most teachers are not of the age group or medical condition category to worry about that... Stop looking at the infection rate, demand a death rate. Then you see truth...

to all those saying 'if teachers dont like it they can quit' can jump into a boiling lake. schools shouldn't be reopened, its not safe for anyone. the teachers arent just thinking of themselves they are thinking of their families cause they have those and their students too...

Que....”it’s all about the children” in 3...2...1...

the stenographer's of the WhiteHouse from WMD is Iraq, to WTC7 office fire collapse. So now, why report on this? Surely Covid19 discriminate disproportionate deaths of minorities are enough for your silence? Danny Jowenko says months for WTC7 StateDept AE911Truth

There was a teacher shortage before the pandemic bc they are treated horribly w low pay. Ppl forget that teachers are highly qualified and can basically work elsewhere whenever they want...hence teacher shortage!

KeepSawinWood I say if they don’t show up they shouldn’t get paid and the money should be given the parents that are at home doing their job and the teachers job.

People asking why teachers are nervous about going back to work -students attend daily spending hours interacting closely with other students/teachers in outdated buildings w/out PPE or soap/warm water in bathrooms. Not to mention the parents who send their kids when they’re ill

No work. No pay. Simple.

This is pathetic. These teachers should be ashamed! There are grocery store workers, delivery drivers, retail stores that have been working through this pandemic. There is a way to do this safely! Fire them and find better teachers.

Kids have a greater chance of dying during the bus ride to school than from COVID. Should we stop riding in dangerous vehicles? Derp.

The regular flu has killed more school aged children than the 'Rona' lately. No one is guaranteed a care free life impervious to risk. I AM A TEACHER AND KIDS NEED SCHOOL, i am ready to teach too. If some are older, have underlying conditions, let them support, do telework.

No paid !

Fuck these unions. Ok. Fine teachers. But you can't shop at grocery stores then either. Sit in your house and wait for us to deliver whatever food we feel like bringing to you

They should quit

Fine, keep them closed. No paychecks and pensions, though.

Why open schools at all , look at the morons coming out of these schools ,BLM, rioters, looters , protesters who hate police, who hate white people, who hate life, who hate the greatest country who hate themselves. How much worse could it be if these morons just stayed home.

The real reason that this administration wants kids back in school is to allow the parents to go back to work and help the economy, not for the sake of the kid's education. A stronger economy will boost the president's re-election chances. If kids die, at least they died educated

Sadly, with the push for online content, many of us teachers CAN teach from the grave...

Heck yes! Teachers & parents should do this in every single state.

Hell yes. We must support our teachers on this in all states!

These fearmongering teachers should all be fired.

It's important to note that all the people who are advocating for schools to reopen attended private schools. Private schools exist because education isn't equal. Schools should be switched to virtual.

don't worry, robots will come soon

THIS MAN will not make an orphan of my daughter. ProtectOurStudents

BACK TO SCHOOL

Mandalyn3183 thinking of you and your family ♥️

Because teachers life’s are more important than grocery workers

gallogly_ian

I read the same story on the Babylon Bee.

Just eliminate all the older, more highly paid teachers lol

Utter nonsense

STAND STRONG! AMERICA GOT YOUR BACK!

Teacher unions are arguing that concerns about the health and safety of educators and staff are being left out of the debate. This is simply not true. Why is it other professions such as nurses and those on the front lines are made to go back to work but teachers are exempt?

This action will be watched and repeated by other states/cities and maybe taxpayers

... we supportfloridateachers

Honest Q: should lower income/high risk youth go back to school first? Because they’re less likely to have resources to help them at home, and I think we can all agree we don’t want to further expand the education gap amongst high risk youth. So folks, how do we do this safely?

❤️❤️❤️ best of luck to those educators

They can cry. I’m a future educator and if a school in Florida needs an English teacher, hit me up. I’ll move down there. No mask is a requirement!
