Florida reported more than 21,600 new COVID cases on Friday -- a state record for the highest number of new infections in one day since the beginning of the pandemic.

During the past week, Florida had a 50% weekly increase in new cases and reported more than 110,000 infections from July 23 to July 29, accordingThroughout July, Florida was one of four states that accounted for 40% of the country’s total cases, and it reported 1 out of every 5 of the nation’s new cases.

“There is no higher risk area in the United States than we’re seeing here,” Aileen Marty, MD, an infectious disease specialist at Florida International University,What’s more, Florida has more COVID-19 hospitalizations than any other state, the news station reported. Florida hospitals reported more than 8,800 COVID-19 patients last week, according. The previous peak was 10,100 patients in July 2020, so the state is now at 87% of that peak.

More than 95% of the hospitalized COVID-19 patients are not fully vaccinated, the association reported. The average age of patients is younger than during previous peaks throughout the pandemic. “The virus has a new target: the unvaccinated and younger people,” Mary Mayhew, president and CEO of the Florida Hospital Association, said in the statement.
