MIAMI — Prosecutors say the Florida deputy who failed to confront a gunman during last year’s Parkland massacre has been arrested on 11 charges.
State Attorney Mike Satz announced Tuesday that 56-year-old Scot Peterson faces child neglect, culpable negligence and perjury charges. Peterson, then a Broward County deputy, was on duty during the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School but never went inside. Satz says the charges carry a combined prison sentence of nearly 100 years. Peterson’s bail was set at $102,000.Twenty-year-old Nikolas Cruz faces the death penalty if convicted of killing 17 people and wounding 17 others in the attack. He has offered to plead not guilty in return for a life sentence, but prosecutors have refused that offer.
_ChrisCurtis Something Gerry Callahan would do. Just another fake tough guy.
KTLA I guess they have to blame someone.... you know.... except the shooter.
jatara_ He was just there to collect a paycheck and ran like a coward when he was needed the most while the football coach lost his life trying to save as many kids as he could!!
Most people in the military don't do anything of any value. They could provide much better school security that local police.
Politicians take our money and totally waste hundreds of billions of dollars every year, but there are not any schools with effective security.
Had it been an all black school. He’d be siting at home chillin right now.
15 months to make the arrest!!! Detectives must be as well trained as the officers used as SROs. 😔
Listening to automatic rifle fire and running into the action alone with a 9mm looks great in the movies but in real life it’s hella difficult when you’re alone and don’t even know how many shooters there are.
If cops can earn Purple Hearts on the job, military rules should be applied to them as well, he needs to be charged with desertion, his job is to serve and protect.
It’s going to be drop there are many case like the “States Supreme Court in South v. Maryland ” a officer have no constitutional rights to protect you, and it’s our duty to protect ourself. That y I don’t understand y ppl want guns ban
A cowards resolve.
Why not arrest the Republican members of Congress who sit idly by and do nothing while Americans are slaughtered at school, at work, and at houses of worship?
Where's the mugshot?
A cop being held accountable?
Cowardly, unimaginable, intolerable yes. Criminal no. See the US Supreme Court ruling in Warren v. District of Columbia. This is clearly the lemon dance in action. Officers who can’t make it on the streets become SROs.
Chicken shit guard. If guards cannot protect children might as well repeal 2nd Amendment, CONFISCATE ALL GUNS and ABOLISH the NRA.
'If only there had been someone with a gun. The bad guy could have been stopped.'
Good guy with a gun 🤷🏽♂️
I love when justice is served. Hope the Broward Coward enjoys sitting in a cell to think about the lives that were lost while he refused to enter.
Isn’t standard police protocol to wait for back up? How would he have any idea how many shooters their were? I wouldn’t go in either. .223 rounds will turn your shit inside out.
This dude gonna catch more years than cops who kill people.

Police won’t protect u. Protect ur self
Unless it’s different in Florida, school resource officers carry a flashlight, not a gun. So, is he being punished for not shining his flashlight at the bullets 🤷🏽♀️, or for not being killed. How can they prove that nobody would’ve died if he had intervened with his flashlight?
Coward
Let him rot in prison
ErnieBandaid
Feels more like political posturing than anything that is expected to stick. Guess we’ll see.
They had AK’s he had a starter pistol what would you have done brave men and women of Twitter
Coward.
ADudeFromNowere My man is INNOCENT!
ali Now they need to do the same for the sheriff.
thats bullshit. if hes alone and outgunned why would he charge in there
cowardice is not criminal, nor is putting your life first before others. He will walk.
But when cops shoot or choke innocent people to death there are usually no charges. Weird, huh?
Politicians will do anything but actually regulate the source of the problem: TOO MANY GUNS.
I guess all resource officers will have to be registered superheroes or face life in prison. Maybe Florida should consider reviewing its gun laws instead of having these prosecutions of armed guards.
Deputy Petersen’s inaction indisputably shocks the conscience. However, it also implicates an important question: is cowardice sufficiently voluntary that it can fairly be criminalized when it occurs in a non-military context?
A trained officer did nothing, yet there's so many NRA supporting idiots who still talk about good guys with guns.
tracydavidson He serves him right he should be locked up
arrest the fla. legislature too for doing NOTHING
Good
SoCal_D Awww sucks to be the good guy with a gun when the good guy with a gun is a coward. Every dude with a gun thinks he'll be Rambo, until shit actually goes down.
I don't think this will curb school shootings. I'm not sure what the point of punishing this guy instead of the people who taught the kid how to shoot on the schools rifle team sponsored by the NRA. Let's say he went in and died was that what he was supposed to do?
You all want to protect your guns, well this is what it will take. Send him to jail forever
The police didn't enter either. Scot Peterson and the police all failed those kids as they bled to death. The fast reaction time not only reduces the shooter's potential targets but also increases th likelihood of those victims' shot survival.
Good guy with a gun? 🤔
KTLA Fog of war principles apply. Bad judgment, poor training or just froze up. Not a crime. Painful truth - 3 of 10 officers will do the same thing.
Shooter gets the death penalty or life with a plea bargain. Guy who should have done some shooting but didn’t gets potentially 100 years before a plea bargain.
Doesn't make sense
sheriff, CNN moderator should be arrested, too
Then what about the Columbine policemen?
Seems like a scape goat. He should not go to jail for not being brave enough to run towards gunshots. We all would like to think about what we would do in a given situation. but until you face true life/death decsion you do not know. Being cowardly should not send him to jail.
Maybe ask him for his pistol and badge. But arrested?
I’m not sure I support this. He should be punished. He should be fired & lose his benefits. But he was not the shooter. He failed but he shouldn’t w punished like he killed the kids due to poor choice or lack of training.
Thoughts and prayers
Sounds good but it’s not illegal to be a coward
So this cop got arrested for not entering a school during a shooting but we can't get there when an unarmed black person is gunned down by a cop and left in the street to die? Got it!
itsmikebivins Whoa
BOOM.
Good. He’s a coward.
why don't they just cut to the chase and arrest NRA__LaPierre
Wake me up when he gets sentenced
So what charges will be laid on Politicians who failed to pass Gun Control Laws?
Good. Not so sure thing will result in anything substantial in the end however.
This doesnt seem like the right thing
Seems like this one might make it to the supreme court, considering they have previously ruled that police have no duty to protect anyone. I hope this gives them a chance to change that precedent, the people we give power to need to be held to a higher standard.
any one from NRA got arrested? and what would you do when a gun pointing at you?
Hey kids! Troll blocking is fun!
Much deserved
It won't stand up to court. The supreme court already had determined that police are in no explicit duty to rescue you.
Do you prefer to be
Great News!
Give me a break.
Awesome!!!!! FixIt!
He allowed the kids to die while he played angry birds on his phone
