The iconic venue lost its popular cofounder late last month.

Joe Gilchrist, co-owner of Flora-Bama Lounge, Package & Oyster Bar, says his appreciation for "characters" fueled the development of a community of songwriters at the coastal venue, leading in turn to the development of the Frank Brown International Songwriters Festival. The Flora-Bama has announced “celebration of life” gatherings honoring the late Joe Gilchrist, a co-owner whose love of music influenced the coastal roadhouse’s stature as a welcoming venue for songwriters.

Since then, the Flora-Bama has provided details on some memorial gatherings. “While every day at Flora-Bama is and will be a celebration of life of Joe Gilchrist,” operators said in a recent post, “we will be holding a special ceremony on June 26. Please mark your calendars and come join us. After the ceremony we will have some entertainment and a social gathering to honor Joe.”

“During these times, we will have many different musicians playing and telling stories about Joe,” said the announcement. It described the sessions as informal gatherings and encouraged visitors to “come and go as you can.”
