Lead actor and executive producer Kaley Cuoco given an update on plans for The Flight Attendant season 3. Based on Chris Bohjalian's eponymous 2018 novel, the Emmy-nominated and darkly comic mystery drama released on HBO Max in December 2020. The Flight Attendant season 1 was subject to rave reviews, with major praise going toward Cuoco's sharp and likable portrayal of the title character, Cassie Bowden.
During season 2, which ended its run last Thursday, The Flight Attendant charted new territory dissimilar to the season 1 storyline. Cuoco's Cassie is reintroduced as a sober CIA surveillant, who keeps an eye out for shady individuals between flights. However, just when it appears that Cassie has her life back together, things quickly spiral down after one of her targets is seemingly assassinated by her doppelgänger in Berlin.
"Now, I'm like, 'Well, we did two. We should probably be done.' And I think I've been outnumbered with that thought. There's definitely interest in doing a third season. I think for me, at this moment, the plane has landed ... I think I need a minute. I just kind of feel like we just ended. Some of my favorite shows on TV take some time to come back, and then I get very excited about a new season.
As Cuoco mentions, given the way season 2 ended, it felt like the series had received a neat ending. However, at the same time, the story did leave room to revisit The Flight Attendant if an opportunity arises in the future. As Cuoco acknowledges, credit for this must be given to The Flight Attendant's writers. The actor said that the team had done a "beautiful job in tying it [the show] up in a pretty bow," such that, "if you had to open the bow, it would be okay.
Although disappointing, Cuoco's decision to hit pause on The Flight Attendant makes sense. While the first two seasons were appreciably different in terms of their plot, the narrative structure and the themes were largely the same. If season 3 were to occur, it may be wise to give Cuoco and The Flight Attendant's creative team time to construct a fresh and exciting story, to avoid any repetition.
