Military drones, especially big ones, may not be as useful as thought against well-equipped enemies.

Share to twitterIran's destruction of a U.S. Global Hawk unmanned aircraft with a surface-to-air missile near the Strait of Hormuz should be a wake-up call for proponents of autonomous or remotely-piloted warfighting systems. The era of drone warfare is not upon us, because the vehicles currently available for military purposes are too limited in their capabilities to survive combat with a reasonably well-equipped adversary.

Obviously, recent advances in artificial intelligence and related technologies have the potential to bolster the performance of autonomous or remotely-piloted warfighting systems, whether they operate in the air, under the seas or on the Earth’s surface. But emerging technologies can also be applied to weapons aimed at countering them. Here are five lessons from last week’s shoot-down that should give proponents of unmanned military vehicles cause for reflection.

“When a second-rate military power shoots down your most capable unmanned aircraft, the lesson is obvious. The U.S. shouldn’t rely too heavily on drones to carry out its war plans”

Lesson 1. Send an old drone when you want it to be shot down. Lesson 2. Blame the mad mullahs, but not the Iranian people. Lesson 3. Shake the box to see what new options exist. Lesson 4. Don't rush to war. Lesson 5. Don't listen to anyone on the Left.

Drones are not very useful against adversaries with a functioning air defence.

These things aren't designed to defend the country as much as generate huge paydays for the contractors.

That wasn’t the drone shot down, that drone the Globala Hawk flies at 40-50k feet!

that we're severely under prepared for a serious conflict with a country that can actually defend itself?
