It’s been more than two weeks since Anchorage has seen any significant or widespread rain. The dry trend will likely continue through the weekend and into next week. The one chance for rain will be Sunday evening as moisture moves in from the south. Showers are likely for the Kenai Peninsula but Anchorage and further north only have a chance for a brief light rain before quickly returning to dry weather Monday.
There are currently 143 active fires in the state, of which 19 are new in the past 24 hours, and 13 are staffed. The Globe fire is rapidly spreading along the Elliott Hwy, about 50 miles north of Fairbanks, now burning more than 6,300 acres. BLM Alaska Fire Service says there are about 73 people assigned to work this fire. Dense smoke in the area is making aerial support more difficult.
