Up for a challenge, columnist David Allen bucked the current taste for short books by tackling a very long one. This classic’s absurdity was a surprise and delight.

“Don Quixote.”As a former English major, I’m more inclined than most to pick up some grade-A literature, but that doesn’t always mean I’m eager to read it. I’d bought a translation of‘ Spanish masterpiece almost two decades ago, bought a different translation a decade later, and never read either.

The man told me excitedly that he had read “Quixote” himself a few years earlier just for the challenge. He thought the book was fantastic and explained its genesis — Cervantes began it while in jail — to me and his companion. It was a humble-brag to carry this enormous classic around and show it off when people asked, “What are you reading?” Even if they hadn’t read it, and most hadn’t, they were impressed.

“…as he thrust his lance into the sail, the wind moved it with so much force that it broke the lance into pieces and picked up the horse and the knight, who then dropped to the ground and were very badly battered.” The first half of “Don Quixote” was published in 1605 and it was a sensation. Cervantes was deep into a sequel when a hack published his own fan-fiction sequel. Cervantes’ true sequel, Part 2, came out in 1615 and it’s even crazier than Part 1.
