The University of Texas Longhorn band during in an undated photo. The 300-piece unit has been the lead-off band for the Fiesta Flambeau Parade from its founding in 1948 onward, except for 1969.My dad gave me all of his old photographs, and I have had them scanned and restored. Amongst the treasures are about a dozen photos of a San Antonio tradition - the Battle of Flowers Parade, I believe. My grandfather, Harry A.

It looks to me as if there are two sets of photos of the parade. The color images appear to me to be late ’40s maybe; the black-and-whites include some shot during the day, some at night, and on the big car from Lackland AFB, there is a mock license plate that looks like 1954, so maybe that dates the black-and-white photos. Of particular interest to me is a photo of what appears to be the University of Texas Longhorn Band. I was a member 1979-1981.

Harry A. Fish, who had worked at G. Fox in Hartford, Conn., one of the nation’s largest department stores at the time, came to San Antonio in 1929 to be president of Washer Bros. clothing stores.

Fish, who died in 1969, went on to other retail ventures, most notably the Woman’s Shop chain of specialty stores for plus- and half-size women . So we know the parade photos can’t be taken later than 1955, when the Fish family still had rooftop access, and look to identifying information in the photos for clues to their dates. The Vogue building in downtown San Antonio. The Fish family would watch the Battle of Flowers and Fiesta Flambeau parades from its rooftop.
