The Bureau of Reclamation said on Tuesday that it is “starting the process” to significantly reduce water use in the Colorado River basin.

| Aug. 17, 2022, 12:12 a.m.At a Senate committee hearing on June 14, Bureau of Reclamation Commissioner Commissioner Camille Calimlim Touton sat before federal lawmakers and delivered a grave ultimatum on the Colorado River., Lake Powell and Lake Mead — the nation’s two largest reservoirs — could fall so low that hydropower production could cease in the near future.

On a call with reporters Tuesday, officials with the Bureau of Reclamation and Department of Interior indicated they would put off the decision to force between 2 and 4 million acre-feet in cuts. “Sixty-three days ago,” Touton said, “I briefed Congress on the science of the Colorado River, the risks we see for the system and the action needed to stabilize the system. The conditions and risks have not changed.”
