Federal Judge Blocks Texas Abortion Law

A federal judge late Wednesday blocked enforcement of a Texas ban on abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, a legal blow against a novel law that has severely limited the procedure statewide.

U.S. District Judge Robert Pitman in Austin issued a preliminary injunction blocking the law, saying the state had pursued “an unprecedented and aggressive scheme to deprive its citizens of a significant and well-established constitutional right.”

DAaronovitch As US is a Federal country does seem odd that Texas can bring in such a ban on abortions after 6 weeks when women who may be so desperate can cross the borders into other States for terminations. Not long ago when women from N. Ireland came to England for this.

The fifth circuit already let this law go through once, this judge’s funding will be easily overturned.

The question is on what basis? Judges should only make decisions on clearly legal issues not based on social concepts which are the domain of the legislature.
