Experts have long warned that a more contagious variant of the coronavirus that was first detected in Britain is spreading rapidly in the United States and that could lead to a new wave of infections. And that is likely to arrive more quickly if more places decide to roll back public health measures that have been proven to slow the spread of the virus.The United States had been seeing steady declines in the number of cases and deaths, but now that has stalled.

The decline is “starting to plateau,” Fauci. And that is happening “at a very high level, plateauing at a level of sixty to seventy thousand new cases per day is not an acceptable level.” Looking at Europe, which is “usually a couple of weeks ahead of us in these patterns,” there was also sharp declines and then a plateau that was followed by a 9 percent increase in cases over the last week.Another infection spike?
