More than 500 homes in Scottsdale, Arizona will run out of water by year's end as drought tightens its grip on the West.

John Locher / AP, fileRIO VERDE FOOTHILLS, Ariz. — More than 500 homes in this affluent desert community that boasts mountain views, ample trees and ranches hidden in the crooks of scrubby hills will run out of water by year's end as drought tightens its grip on the West.

seven years. “Some of us will borrow water from a friend’s well, others will have to pay a water hauler from far away.”makes the Western United States hotter and drier, the looming crisis in Rio Verde Foothills exemplifies how cities and states could be forced to vie for a diminishing amount of the natural resource.

Scottsdale Water, the municipal utility, said the decision was one element of a larger contingency plan by the Central Arizona Project, which delivers water from the Colorado River to central and southern Arizona, to reduce its consumption. Scottsdale residents also were urged to reduce their usage as a first step toward more stringent restrictions.

“It’s a priority because why wouldn’t we want to solve this problem,” said Jennifer Simpson, who was drawn to Rio Verde Foothills 23 years ago by its wide-open spaces.Maricopa County officials said they can't fix the problem because they're not water providers. Scottsdale officials said they have no other option because their first commitment is to their own residents.

A few decades earlier than expected.

Crocodile tears for these affluent Scottsdale homeowners who should have known these risks when they purchased their homes in this unincorporated area of the county.

Perhaps factoring in infrastructure before population density is in the interest of people living there. Honestly I’m losing my mind with this stupid shit. Get a desalination plant we have lots of ocean dummies.

They're upset because their rates could jump to $20 for 1,000 gallons to be delivered. I'm in a small town in WV. Water everywhere, right? $12/1,000 gallons, and a minimum bill imposed of 2,000 gallons to keep service. They built in the desert. $20 isn't that bad.

How many people have been drawn to Arizona? It's a desert. Sooner or later the republican leaders that have lured so many there must have known the limitations of the water supply.

Or drill down to the Primary Water source that is unlimited in quantity…

WE were warned years ago and no one wanted to change. Golf courses are more important than drinking water to many. Can't say this is a surpirse.

It's almost as if building homes in the desert was a bad idea....🤔

Who needs a green new deal when we have no water?

This cannot be! MAGA says there is no climate change!

This is the sort of thing civil wars will be fought over in the near future.... while the GQP is worrying about which bathrooms everyone is using, neighbors will be shooting each other over access to fresh water. But don't worry, I'm sure they have a 'plan.'

I’ll be happy to send them some water. Only $100.00/gallon.

At least the lights will remain on in Vegas.

All thanks to the wonderful water stealing being performed by Saudi's and Nestle.

This just in..people living in desert soon to be without water..back to you Ted

They let too many illegals in. Used up all that water! CloseTheBorderKuntmella!

That’s awful!!

Who represents them in congress?

So much for the song about ocean front property in Arizona!

Don’t worry, god will save them apparently.

That's why I just bought an 500 acre parcel on Lake Superior. I'll be residing there as of July 1st, 2024. All the water I can drink!

Republicans can’t do anything right

Is Hobbs done cheating yet? They still counting?

Open the CAP.

But let’s keep bottling water and putting them on shelves…

Maybe they should ask the Saudis to give them some.

Kalel212223 Maybe stop bottled water companies from doing that for a while?

If only there was some kind of green new deal or something that could unite humanity against climate change peril

Call Saudi Arabia...

Maybe Republicans cozying up to Saudi isn't a good idea. And one has to wonder why they did this.

It’s as if not only living in a desert, but also building sprawled out communities in a desert, is not a good idea after all

When the water goes, the thin line which separates civilization from a free for all will break immediately. Oil is fleeting. Water is vital. Follow the water.

all those golf courses and almond farms

That's what happens when you water your lawn when you should be saving your water.

There's a climatic upheaval headed our way and like a tidal wave at a distance out at sea, its only seemingly unforeboding. Until, its right up to the shoreline and then it's too late! The climate waits for no man!

If this was not NBC, i might believe them! I do know water is in trouble. I don’t recall learning if you want a plentiful water supply, build in the desert, then have millions of people move there or walk across the border!!

You'd almost think it was unwise to grow big cities in a desert.

Sure, let’s keep building in the desert…

'bUt I wAnT aN eXpEnSiVe HoUsE wHeReVeR i WiSh!'

Can't see they didn't see this coming .... Climate scientists have been warning about this for YEARS. As Don McLean sang: 'They're not listening still Perhaps they never will'

Over building in the west is not the best idea

I thought long ago the courts favored more water rights to Arizona and less to California. Then the housing boom started in Arizona since they thought they had unlimited water. Your house is only worth something as long as you have utilities to it.

This tweet is so dumb. These 500 houses are not in Scottsdale. They are in an unincorporated area and buy water by the truck from Scottsdale.

Building in the desert wasn’t a good idea

Stop causing fear!! That most likely won’t happen.

That doesn’t sound good.

Time to start limiting population growth in the area.

Maybe it's not a good idea to build homes in a desert with no water supply. Just a thought.

Sounds like Scottsdale needs to start a prayin.

Whoa

maybe those saudi water leases weren't such a good idea afterall... RepublicansAreTheProblem

Idk... Maybe we should stop with the green lawns in the desert. Just a thought

Propaganda

More taxes will help

Maybe stop giving other countries $bilions for a while and help out American citizens across multiple states that need clean and more abundant water.

Look around. The Mississippi River is at an all time low.

PhilipReichert To all my friends who say there isn't global warming look.. read, take a close look, and tell me it doesn't exist, what do you want? A glacier to just crawl up on your front lawn? HEY LOOK THE SKY IS FALLING! oh forget it,it's just a ICBM !

Bless the land and sea.

It’s not just going to be AZ. When the Mississippi River is drying up. I’m in Nebraska. We have this great aquifer but it won’t last if all our lakes and the great big Platte River are dry. Our dryland farms suffered greatly this year. What usually makes 80 bushels made 10.

Great Lakes real estate 🚀

Many people are saying “maybe it isn’t the best idea to build homes where there isn’t much water”

You mean humans need to face reality of our envy and climate change! Shocking!

And they say climate change isn't real

People living in the middle of a desert are running out of water? Who could have guessed that?

The is one of the new realities.....prime land will move to where the water is.

UnpluggedUser This is not an anomaly at this time. Localities, businesses and individuals will have to adjust or go extinct.

There’s always Lake Kari!

Maybe building a house in the desert wasn't a good idea.

This is what happens when planning commissions and city councils don't say no to developers.

Who could see this coming? For decades now, the scientists and the politicians who chose to ignore the climate threat.

This is real folks and not just Arizona. I’m a water manager in California and this could/will happen to some major areas of the state if we don’t get snow and rain this year.

Collect all the snow from Buffalo and send it out west

Have a friend living in Chandler and until recently his HOA required green grass lawns. If ppl want green lawns, GO EAST ON I-40!

I lived in 'The valley of the Sun' for way too long. A state like this, is no way to live

Thanks climate change.

I wonder if they could have a well dug for their homes? Surely there are aquifers deep beneath the desert.
