A 5-year-old girl was shot and killed by another child inside her Merced home Thursday afternoon, police said.
“After a preliminary investigation, detectives believe the 5-year-old victim was accidentally shot by another juvenile family member,” police said in a statement. He later was arrested on suspicion of child endangerment that resulted in the death of a child, felony reckless driving while evading officers and a prohibited person in possession of firearms and ammunition.
“Responsible gun storage — storing guns locked, unloaded and separate from ammunition — can save children’s lives,” the nonprofit says.Det. Sgt. Robert Solis of the Merced Police Department said that the juvenile suspected in the shooting was at home with his mother Friday and that charges would not be filed against him.
