The whole series for me has been underwhelming it’s the curse of sequel trilogies...(hobbit, Star Wars, even Indiana Jones)

That's exactly what the Fantastic Beasts needed. I'm not judging J.K Rowling but writing a book ain't the same thing as writing an screenplay, even if he didn't change the story, J.K just needed an screenwriter to helm her to adapt his story to the big screen.
