Johns Hopkins University on Friday hosted the opening rounds of the NCAA Division III men’s basketball tournament inside an empty Baltimore gym — the day after Maryland confirmed three cases of coronavirus

“Precautions should include cancelling all auxiliary events that put players in contact with crowds such as meet and greets, and press events,” NCPA Executive Director Ramogi Huma added in a statement this week. “Athletic programs should also take every possible measure to sanitize buses and airplanes used to transport players.”

Johns Hopkins announced not long after Maryland's coronovirus cases were confirmed that it would close the tournament games it was hosting. “In light of Maryland's recently confirmed cases of COVID-19, and based on CDC guidance for large gatherings, we have determined that it is prudent to hold this tournament without spectators,” the university’s athletic department said. “We are not making any determination about other JHU events at this time; while we await further guidance from public health authorities, we will be assessing large events on a case-by-case basis.
