A San Francisco-born cookbook author was also named the Humanitarian of the Year.

Lance Yamamoto/Special to SFGATE"As one of the most prolific chefs on TV with 3,500 episodes and 30 cookbooks, Yan has brought the joy of Chinese cooking to America with his motto, 'If Yan Can Cook, So Can You!'" shared the James Beard Foundation in the announcement.

While Yan's first time cooking on television in 1978 was completely chaotic, involving a frozen trunk of groceries that sent him into"sheer panic mode," wrote, the show’s executive editor was charmed by his humor. And thus, Yan's seminal show,"Yan Can Cook," was born. Yan went on to dedicate his life to educating the world about Asian cuisine, and also oversaw Bay Area restaurants M.Y. China and Yan Can Bistro . He ran cooking schools in San Francisco and in Shenzhen, China, and donated his archives to UC Davis, where he got his masters in food science.

Grace Young, a San Francisco-born cookbook author, was also honored in this year's James Beard Awards as the Humanitarian of the Year. Young was recognized for"her work to save America’s Chinatowns amid Asian American and Pacific Islander hate during the COVID-19 pandemic," shared the James Beard Foundation.
