Incidents of overheated lithium batteries on aircraft are now happening at a rate of more than one per week, on average.

The lithium battery inside a personal device caught fire on a Spirit Airlines flight earlier this week.Spirit Airlines flight from Dallas to Orlando was diverted to Jacksonville earlier this week after a lithium battery in a personal device caught fire in an overhead bin.

In 2022, theat least 62 incidents involving lithium-ion batteries on airplanes and in airports, compared to 54 incidents the previous year. “These are lithium battery related events involving smoke, fire, or extreme heat that the FAA is aware of and should not be considered a complete listing of all such incidents,” notes the agency.

Most of these incidents were caught early and resulted only in a short flight delay, such as the United Airlines flight on August 29, 2022. “Prior to departure a passenger's lithium battery power bank started to overheat and smoke. Flight attendants were notified and secured the power bank in a Thermal Containment Bag,” according to the FAA’s report of that incident.

The term “runaway thermal event” appears frequently in these reports, referring to a phenomenon where the battery enters an uncontrollable, self-heating state.

Battery-related fires spark push for regulationRechargeable lithium-ion batteries are increasingly providing a backbone for the climate-inspired electrification of everything. But reports of fires believed to be caused by them have increased and so have the number of bills calling on more regulation. Reasonable safety requirements and more research into the best way to control lithium battery fires is good. Important to remember, however, that gas and petroleum products cause fires and worse across the country every single day, they just don’t usually make national headlines. That photo low key horrifying Because gasoline never catches on fire.

Exclusive: Chinese lithium producers set price floor as demand evaporates, sources sayChina's top lithium producers agreed this week to set a floor price of 250,000 yuan ($36,380) per tonne of lithium carbonate, six people familiar with the matter said, in an effort to slow a plunge in the price of the battery raw material. I think it's more than a price war among Chinese auto makers. The West & Japan's experimentation with alternative battery chemistries is the largest shadow over future lithium carbonate prices. Add to that the position the CCP finds themselves in vis a vis Russia & Taiwan.
