Government workers responsible for making sure airplanes are safe say they face pressure from companies not to raise too many safety concerns, a survey of Federal Aviation Administration workers says. They also say bosses don’t back them often enough.

FILE - This June 19, 2015, file photo, shows the Department of Transportation Federal Aviation Administration building in Washington. Federal employees overseeing Boeing and other aircraft makers say they face pressure from the companies and fear retribution from their own bosses if they raise too many safety concerns, according to a survey of the workers that was delivered to Congress on Friday, Aug. 7, 2020.

Many of the Federal Aviation Administration employees surveyed said they believe that agency managers are too concerned with the industry’s objectives and aren’t held accountable for decisions about safety. FAA Administrator Stephen Dickson said the report shows “that we have work to do to address problems” in the safety culture within the agency’s aviation safety organization. “It is completely unacceptable that there are employees who lack confidence that their safety concerns are taken seriously.”

The FAA asked Mitre Corp. to conduct the survey and report last year after the agency promised to improve its safety culture. Mitre said it sent surveys to more than 7,000 employees in the FAA’s aviation safety group and 25% responded.

JonLemire Not like it could result in a catastrophe. Oh wait! That’s exactly what can happen!

USPS, FAA, FBI, CDC and many others are pressured by this administration to push an agenda that reduces Americans' safety and rights. We are in a systemic repression of American agencies. Congress is deadlocked. The power grab to retain power at the cost of lives and safety.

JonLemire This is insane

Because these bosses at transport Canada can get cushy jobs at the airlines and related business when retired.

BulldogTheodore People didn’t wake up to the destruction of the Civil Service until the Post Office. In fact trump has been destroying ALL of the executive branch. You have no idea how bad the entire Department of Transportation is, affecting the safety of everyone.

JonLemire Seems like flying not gonna be too safe. Could be a big deal, no?

That's why people don't fly. They are probably not paying enough and expect the unattainable. I don't trust the counters at the grocery stores.

America is trying hard to create another disaster... Trump must have see what happened in Beirut and said 'hold my beer'

Timberdoodle20 Because Boeing did so well on safety. And senatemajldr wants blanket immunity from liability for US corporations.

Reduced regulations = MORE PROFITS... MORE damage to economy, employee health, employee safety and poorer air and water quality.🤔🙄🤬🤬

merica

FAA is joke with this president.

Do those workers have ways to report perceived pressure? I'd say yes. If not reporting then they need better training. Probably a pay cut would help empower them to report more when there is pressure perceived.
