Sometime after qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics on Sunday, Simone Biles found herself facing a case of the “twisties” — what gymnasts call the feeling when their bodies and minds can’t connect, and negotiating a trick becomes more difficult and dangerous.

Biles posted a video — which she later deleted — of her doing a dismount on the uneven bars during training. She kept trying and failing to do 2 1/2 twists, just as she failed to do a full Amanar vault during the team finals on Tuesday night, coming up one full twist short, leading her to step away from the competition to protect herself.

She’s dealt with them before. The difference this time? They’re not just affecting her on vault and floor exercise, as they have in the past. Now, they’re following her to bars and beam, too.

Trick?

I’m no gymnast, but that concept of the body and mind not connecting is very familiar to me. You’re just not in control. Your body and mind want the same things, but you can’t get them to cooperate. It’s like two distracted people trying to drive the same car.

I get the twisties just watching them. If she feels like she can't get her mind and body to match up then be safe. We want to watch one if the best Olympians ever to spin, fall and be paralyzed? She has nothing to prove to anyone.

I too suffer from SLS while engaging in competitive sports. It can be overcome, sometimes it takes years, but I’m a survivor of SLS. Good luck Simone.

Simone Biles makes mental health the talk of the Tokyo GamesBrittney Griner has long been open about her ongoing battle with depression, an ailment that triggered suicidal thoughts when she was younger and last year drove her out of the WNBA bubble because the isolation was too much to handle. Considered the best gymnast in the world, Biles pulled out of team competition in the middle of the event and then opted not to defend her 2016 gold medal in the all-around Thursday night at the Tokyo Games. The topic of mental health, growing in frequency in sports over the past year, was everywhere at the Tokyo Olympics on Thursday, a day after Biles made her decision to not compete in the all-around. I’m 67 years old and I’ve never heard of an athlete dropping out of a major athletic event because of mental strain. We are getting so soft!
