There are an array of shark species in the Gulf of Mexico. Most are small, but Dr. Sean Powers explained there has been an increase in shark population due to repopulation efforts, specifically larger species.He's studied sharks off the Alabama Gulf Coast since 2005.
Along with an increasing shark population, more people are going to the beach leading to more interactions. Although these two populations have increased, Powers said there's only been a slight increase in the number of attacks globally. "They are not hunting humans. Sharks, to our knowledge, don't key in on human beings. It is more that they are chasing the bait."
"That indicates a very aggressive shark and its behavior will be erratic," explained Powers. "If a shark does charge you, defend yourself. This idea that you can play dead and sharks will go away, it won't work. Sharks are aggressive and will only respond to aggression."
