Gavin Newsom is expected on Wednesday to issue a moratorium on the death penalty in California, granting reprieves to the hundreds of people on death row. By signing his executive order, Newsom will lower the country’s death row population by a quarter.
The death penalty is not a new entrant to the political culture wars, but in recent years, the partisan split on the issue has widened. A Pew Research Center poll completed last year found that a small majority of Americans support the death penalty but that those views were split by party. More than three-quarters of Republicans support executions while only about a third of Democrats agree.
That was also a year in which the Republican candidate for president garnered 37 percent of the vote — as opposed to the 31 percent Trump received four years later. It was a year in which Republicans won 16 House seats, as opposed to the seven seats Trump’s party won in the state in November. In other words, the politics seem to have changed.
What I don't understand is the concept of 'humane executions.' If you're gonna enforce a severe punishment, then why make it nice, clean & sterile? Wasn't the whole point of the death penalty to discourage crime? Maybe the red states should return to hangings & the chair.
Agreed, look at the examples set by Illinois and Michigan- the crime rate that would put one available for the death penalty in those states that have it is nearly zero in Illinois and Michigan- right?

Red states- make themselves feel powerful by killing people who cannot defend themselves, and causing the state to spend millions of dollars per inmate during the appellate process. The death penalty should go away. It’s far cheaper to keep inmates in prison for life.

Unlike California, many states believe in removing people from society who have shown they can’t co-exist with a civilized population. My only complaint with the death penalty is that it’s too slow and too expensive of a process.
