WASHINGTON - An agreement between the United States and China to roll back existing tariffs as part of a ‘phase one’ trade deal faces fierce internal opposition at the White House and from outside advisers, multiple sources familiar with the talks said. The idea of a tariff rollback was not part of the original October “handshake” deal between Chinese Vice Premier Liu He and U.S. President Donald Trump, these sources said.

Chinese officials said earlier Thursday that tariff reductions had been agreed, and a U.S. official confirmed that that was the case. There is a divide within the administration over whether rolling back tariffs will give away U.S. leverage in the negotiations, the sources said.

Navarro self-immolation?

Biz We won’t have a deal with China until USMCA is signed and we can get the EU to join sanctions and tariffs of their own on China. US is the only one rattling the Chinese cage but everyone on the sidelines is like go get em!

realKyleOlbert We all know China is not going to stick with their side of the bargain. How would it look for GOP in next year's election if US roll back China tariffs and got nothing back in return?

NoahCRothman Meanwhile

NoahCRothman I’d been wondering what caused the sudden dip in the market today. Seemed like a mostly straight line but higher, then there was a sudden drop

lmao at how they refer to this as 'phase one' of trade deal. It's more like people are gonna be pissed as hell at escalated prices during the holidays, which will ultimately affect re-election, so let's just put things back to what they were & call it Phase 1. Trump is a moron.

realDonaldTrump DonaldJTrumpJr EricTrump DanScavino stevenmnuchin1 seanhannity Scavino45 parscale larry_kudlow CLewandowski_ SecretaryRoss sure way 2 screw up everything as usual, if u listen 2 those fools. 2020 chances already slim. Remove tariffs or lose in landslide

NoahCRothman Well-oiled machine.

Awesome, so tough on trade negotiations 🙄🙄. So he gives them what they want, after destroying our agriculture trade. And we end up with a nothing burger.

Is this another example of the US President undercutting his own negotiators or staff?

It would be short sighted & a mistake to roll back any tariffs with China at such an early stage. Obviously, you people have no experience with Chinese negotiations.

Biz We all knew realDonaldTrump and WhiteHouse clowns 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡would screw this up. More chaos, no deals.

China tried to pressure Trump thinking impeachment was full steam ahead. Major miscalculation by Xi.

👍👍👍

So the tariffs achieved a return to the position before the tariffs.

Who is the loser the American people.

Manipulating the markets again
