A wetlands garden at The Commons at Hermann Park is among the projects that should be completed by 2024.Construction has officially begun on The Commons. Hermann Park Conservancy and the Houston Parks and Recreation Department recently broke ground on the 26-acre green space at the southwest corner of Fannin and Cambridge.

“If I had a fairy wand, I would go back in time and complete this two years ago. Can you imagine what it would have meant to frontline healthcare workers?” said Doreen Stoller, president of Hermann Park Conservancy. “The six acres at the corner of Cambridge and Fannin will be native perennials under 100-year-old live oaks.”

Highlights include several new pavilions, a carousel and the Play Gardens, a nearly 3-acre update on the existing Buddy Carruth Playground for All Children. Stoller anticipates that multiple play areas, especially inclusive play features, will be popular attractions. Themed play areas will be separated by various age groups, ranging from 6 month to 12 years, with shaded seating areas for parents. Plans include a 45-foot-tall rocket ship slide, space adventure and The Bayou, an interactive experience to explore Houston’s distinct natural water features.
