The combative former sheriff, who was ousted by voters in 2022, is challenging county claims that he made discriminatory remarks about the inspector general.

FILE – In this Sept. 17, 2020 file photo, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva comments on the investigation of the shooting of two deputies during a news conference at the Hall of Justice in downtown Los Angeles. A photo from surveillance video of the assault is at left. Authorities say they have arrested a man in connection with the shooting of two Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies as they sat in their squad car. Villanueva and District Attorney Jackie Lacey on Wednesday, Sept.

Huntsman did not respond to comment and the Los Angeles county counsel’s office said it is reviewing the claim. According to the Times story, Huntsman had accused Villanueva of “dog-whistling to the extremists he caters to” when he repeatedly referred to the inspector general by his foreign-sounding birth name, Max-Gustaf.

Huntsman has publicly used that name on his county desk plaque and it also appears online at Transparent California, a salary and pension database for California public officials, the tort claim notes. Villanueva said his employment ineligibility designation is unprecedented, noting that even disgraced former Los Angeles City Councilman Mark Ridley-Thomas, who was sentenced in 2023 to 3 1/2 years in federal prison for bribery and fraud stemming from his tenure as a member of the Board of Supervisors, does not appear on such a list.Crime and Public Safety |
