Ronald S. Sullivan Jr., a faculty dean at Harvard, is defending himself in a new op-ed

in June. Now, he wants Harvard administrators to realize they were wrong in making him step down.

“I am willing to believe that some students felt unsafe,” considering he was representing Weinstein, Sullivan wrote. “But feelings alone should not drive university policy. Administrators must help students distinguish between feelings that have a rational basis and those that do not. In my case, Harvard missed an opportunity to help students do that.”

Some students were outraged by Sullivan’s initial decision to join Weinstein’s legal team, and chose to protest byfilled with phrases like “Down with Sullivan.” The dean writes about that explicitly in his op-ed, saying that his nine-year-old son saw the graffiti. “I had to explain to my son that representing unpopular clients serves an important constitutional role in our democracy and that I had done nothing wrong,” he wrote.

“I would hope that any student who felt unsafe as a result of my representation of Mr. Weinstein might, after a reasoned discussion of the relevant facts, question whether his or her feelings were warranted,” he added. “But Harvard was not interested in having that discussion.”black faculty deans appointed in Harvard’s history and were tapped in 2009. They led the Winthrop House, an undergraduate residential building.

The impending Weinstein trial has been one of the most controversial, closely watched criminal cases in recent months. Weinstein—who has become an industry pariah after being accused by more than 80 women of sexual misconduct —was indicted by the Manhattan District Attorney’s office in May 2018, and is now facing charges that include five counts of sexual misconduct and rape; if convicted, he could face life in prison. Weinstein has pleaded not guilty. The trial is set to begin this September.
