"[I]t's important that these people be at the office, in my view," Schmidt, 66, tells, arguing that for decades, the in-office style has been proven effective. "I'm a traditionalist."
Schmidt says it's not just a matter of nostalgia: There are practicalities to working together in person. For example, he says that conversations about professionalism — which might be particularly necessary at companies full of young employees — are much harder to have virtually. Younger employees, particularly those between the ages of 25 and 35, can also use in-office settings to more effectively develop their management styles, Schmidt says. For him, that includes learning about meeting etiquette, presentation skills, workplace politics and dealing with competitors, both internally and externally.
There are exceptions, Schmidt notes: Some workers might have specialized roles that don't require a lot of in-person communication, others might deeply dislike the office's social nature and many probably aren't looking forward to reintegrating lengthy commutes into their schedules.
MakeIt Managers are a complete waste of capital. People should act as grown ups... work diligently, be respectful to others, learn to manage yourself, manage your own time and your own effort. That is accountability as its finest. Or get fired. Plain and simple.
MakeIt Yes, working virtually isn’t as effective at breaking group think. We need to mingle and express differing viewpoints.
MakeIt Dinosaur
MakeIt Interesting how it is always 'management' folks suffering it the most. Afraid we find out your uselessness ? Feeling unsecure ?
MakeIt Intriguing question comes to mind. How necessary is management? It’s a philosophical question -no need to “freak out.” Good managers are in short supply.
MakeIt You hire strong, reliable, and loyal people, Schmidt. there is a reason why I have never heard of you before and will forget about you soon enough.
MakeIt 'I don't know how you build great management' ?!
MakeIt zoom work isnt as productive..never would be in long run
MakeIt Maybe companies don’t need management. Has anyone thought about that? Why to pay top dollar to people who doesn’t do jack shit! Time to change how companies operate… cancelmanagement
MakeIt It's possible it's called virtual meetings if even that, my job is web based in or out of the office. I don't need to go in to the office to do my job.
MakeIt It’s probably still possible virtually but our tech isn’t there yet
MakeIt Impossible is nothing
MakeIt He is 100 percent right
MakeIt I can easily teach you mr Schmidt, for a fee. I’ll give you a hint: communication.
MakeIt What he is seeking is an environment at the office just as a COOP full of chicken ready to be transported on command.
MakeIt run a team of ai instead of human 😂
MakeIt Did they have good management pre-Covid?
MakeIt He is right.
MakeIt 'For him, that includes learning about meeting etiquette, presentation skills, workplace politics' OMG, how will I ever learn workplace politics 🙄 That's the dumbest shit to endorse return to office.
MakeIt Just because some people don’t know how doesn’t mean it’s not possible.
MakeIt MBBA - Management by browsing around
MakeIt You mean “manage at all”
MakeIt This is really about old white men afraid of losing power. It's about upper management getting their asses kissed at the office. Period. Technology has made in office work unnecessary for most people. Give people a choice.
MakeIt a nonsense
MakeIt “Im old” -this guy
MakeIt San Francisco 1880.
MakeIt Usually when many companies are experiencing mass layoffs it becomes a battle of either working in the office or not working at all.
MakeIt Work from home is BS unless you have some dumb measurable widget business. Your career will never advance.
MakeIt Also Ex CEO Schmidt, 'I think that anyone in my position should start by saying that luck is the first and most important thing I had. Luck of birth, education, interest, timing and the business I was in.' IJS
MakeIt Exactly!
MakeIt $HUGE FsdPharma
MakeIt Gentleman must have no idea how minorities can feel as if they never have enough space. Can't believe he didn't at least nod to that in an environment on edge not just because of Covid. Thanks!!
MakeIt Summary: “I think there is a lot of evidence that humans are social,” he says. “And that the current virtual tools are not the same as the informal networks that occur within a corporation.”
MakeIt I think for certain roles, remote work isn’t detrimental. But nothing replaces the effectiveness and efficiency of in-person communication and collaboration.
MakeIt Ass-kissing requires that in-person touch. Every brown-nosing middle manager clawing and backstabbing his way up the corporate ladder knows this.
MakeIt It really is a no brainer. The work from home fad will pass and settle down with a blend for some roles and even those will have minimal hours working at home. Young people in particular...get to the office. It will help you.
MakeIt Corporation propaganda
MakeIt Employees like it.
MakeIt If you don't know how to build great management virtually in 2022 then you are out of touch and obsolete. Companies that can access the best talent from around the world will outpace rigid businesses with outdated thinking.
MakeIt Only a small percent I reckon can be disciplined enough to work at home.
MakeIt In office work is truly better.
MakeIt Agree 100%.
MakeIt There’s a reason he’s an “ex” CEO of google.
MakeIt Just because he doesn't know how doesn't mean building a great virtual management is not possible.
MakeIt Because you don't know how
MakeIt Maybe someone should clearly explain how well working from home has evolved. Productivity has increased noticeably. Less stress. Etc
MakeIt key word's in that statement is 'I dont know'... others do!
MakeIt I tend to disagree. Best work environments are based on hybrid models -
MakeIt This is exactly why we need younger folks in management position. We are less rigid and adapt to changing circumstances quicker! Tech jobs can perpetually be hybrid. Unlike other sectors - manufacturing, logistics, health care & life sciences etcera..
MakeIt There is something thing to be said for in person collaboration. I have lived this experience as a software engineer discussing design and debugging problems. Perhaps a hybrid approach works.
MakeIt Old school thinking, a need to control and a need to justify layers of mgmt.
MakeIt We have regular meetings at the company 2-3 times a week or a month Video conferencing gets you fined However, the recall meeting procee
MakeIt The company sets goals and presents results As employees develop their skills and enjoy better vacations, they add to their work to be grateful. In the US, this system is growing mor
MakeIt What a ditwad. 2001 I worked in Minneapolis, managed a team in AZ. There's a thing called communication. You don't have to stand over someone and watch them work to see results.
MakeIt He doesn’t have to know.
MakeIt 🤮
MakeIt Ex-employee talking about employment 😂
MakeIt That’s why he’s the ex CEO. Times are changing.
MakeIt He is too old to understand; that’s why he is Ex 😄
MakeIt Just Did he try ? Old management didn't think about new way to share ideas even if we are at home. May be it's not perfect but all meetings are ? Not sure.
MakeIt Remote brown nosing is so difficult.
MakeIt Reposting this won't make him a better manager...the worlds moved on...
MakeIt Dude needs a quick read for the weekend.
MakeIt We need to be high on Adoptive Intelligence.
MakeIt His biggest concern is getting some new office strange. He's not going to find that working from home.
MakeIt I’ll be investing my money with companies who meet face to face to get the job done. The competitive landscape of business gives the edge over other companies who do not come to the office and meet with their colleagues in person. Pay them more but get them together. It works!
MakeIt AMEN!!!
MakeIt Exactly 💯
MakeIt The same way you build autonomous vehicles
MakeIt Does this mean WEF greenies have abandoned carbon emissions by useless eaters selfishly not car pooling driving to work in their gas guzzler SUV's...
MakeIt Thats prob why he is ex😂
MakeIt That sounds like a you problem to me.
MakeIt Again, just cause he doesn't know doesn't mean it can't be done right
MakeIt Remote is the way forward - the office is dead
MakeIt I'll one up it: I don't know how you build great workplace competencies, collaboration, and teams virtually.
MakeIt That's the point... With remote work most management is redundant and not necessary.
MakeIt So he is not that smart after all…… what about a better quality of life working from home …..
MakeIt Effective communication is how your build a solid management team. That has nothing to do with the four walls you’re surrounded by.
MakeIt He is literally admitting to being a shitty manager. Well done Schmidt, admit you're an relic of a dead age
MakeIt Boooooooooooooooo
MakeIt Because those damn Apes are ruining everything, Boo Hoo, rich people cry a lot, and seem to think they know what’s best for me, same people that told me AMCTheatres was a bad investment & look! They beat top and bottom, reduced debt added to port, ALL in a pandemic Great 🇺🇸story
MakeIt True, but companies are having trouble hiring and retaining employees as it is.
MakeIt But muh ps5 muh Facebook posts
MakeIt Working from will only be available to very few going forward as businesses realize you can’t keep an organization together if you only see workers through a computer screen.
MakeIt Good thing he's a former CEO bc it sounds like he's unqualified to be a leader.
MakeIt its been 3 years and google is clocking profits, nothing happened to getting job done or management. What more can they extract by pulling people to office. Or is it ROI on real estate investment already done?
MakeIt Says the **checks notes** EX-CEO. FOH.
MakeIt Guess we know why he's the ex-CEO.
MakeIt Because companies will discover they don't need all the middle management types and start firing them?
MakeIt today’s $1.9 trillion global tech behemoth ⚓️
MakeIt Executives love offices because they like to micromanage their employees. If the work gets done, it shouldn’t matter where it’s done.
MakeIt So learn. The bulk of manage,to today is remote
MakeIt Lack of vision, not a good quality for a CEO
MakeIt
MakeIt Teams and Zoom only at early stages, online virtual working is the way of the future…and collaboration not inhibited by geography Metaverse
MakeIt It's waist full and inefficient going to the office. It takes commute time, wear and tear on one, and on their car.
MakeIt Basically he thinks in-office work is better because that's the only way he could satisfy his need to feel under control... micromanagement freak.
MakeIt He is child, that’s why we need replacement. We have internet, we need to build next generation infrastructure to work remotely with strong management
MakeIt BREAKING: Internet company CEO doesn’t know how to use the internet.
MakeIt Answer: Meta….?
MakeIt Eric might just be old.
MakeIt Check how Biden won the election…virtual.
MakeIt Remote is the way forward - the office is dead
MakeIt Management is overrated!! You need talent and dedicated employees who could do their job from anywhere with not much management oversight.
MakeIt Creative ideas develop through discussion which is more likely to happen in-office. O cannot believe world put up with 2 years of work from home culture.
MakeIt however, you learn you need fewer managers.
MakeIt there may be other things Eric doesn't know as well.
MakeIt It’s pretty straightforward. People work together instead of forming a cult.
MakeIt You heard it from the man himself “we are done innovating at Google”
MakeIt Old fart cant wrap his head around a new idea
MakeIt Maybe you don't need so much management
MakeIt They can’t get the genie back into the bottle. These execs will now have to “embrace change”, as they’ve been preaching to their employees for decades. Time for THEM to endure a 2-day ‘who moved my cheese’ consultant seminar.
MakeIt Lol , the duck 🦆
MakeIt I see the benefits of in office work especially when it comes to certain interactions with my colleagues that cane be duplicated online. But I get why people prefer working from home.
MakeIt That’s why you’re the ex CEO
MakeIt So basically he has spent 40 years working in an office and doesn’t know how to adapt - at least he admits he doesn’t know how to do it - meanwhile organisations having record results despite a pandemic because. Working remotely is more productive
MakeIt are you sure it has nothing to do with investments in mbs. Signs of stress deepen in the office real estate market
MakeIt So, an unimaginative glorified manager, who was involved in a massive recruiting scheme, doesn’t understand how to cope with modern business practices. Because, if young employees don’t see us micromanaging them, how will they ever learn to micromanage their underlings?
MakeIt We need less managers and more leaders!
MakeIt That's why he's the ex-CEO
MakeIt Ex ceo has thoughts
