San Diego State product has a path back to golf's greatest tournament after making debut there in 2022

After a lifetime playing golf, after four years at San Diego State, after grinding on the Canadian tour, after grinding on the Web.com Tour, after six years on the PGA Tour, after dropping to 584in the world rankings and losing his tour card, after fighting his weight and diabetes, J.J. Spaun finally drove down Magnolia Lane last spring and teed it up at golf’s Masters tournament.

“That would mean I’m doing a lot of good things,” Spaun, 32, said of another Masters invitation, “and at least confirm I belong in the caliber of player that gets exempt for that tournament.”There are 19 criteria, four of which apply to Spaun and one of which he nearly met one last year at Augusta National: The top 12 finishers plus ties get automatic berths the following year. That was 1-over-par, and Spaun was even par through 51 holes.

The next route to Augusta: Qualifying for the 30-player field at the end-of-season Tour Championship. Spaun was 33The next chance: the top 50 of the World Golf Rankings at the end of the calendar year. He was 85, trending up after finishing fifth and 12in his first two events of the year. Then he shot 78 on the South Course in Thursday’s second round and missed the cut, which likely will be accompanied by a rankings drop.
