Anywhere from 1,000 to 2,000 people get the plague every year, the World Health Organization reports. But that estimate doesn't account for unreported cases. An average of seven Americans get the plague every year, according to the CDC.

The same scourge that caused the Black Death in the Middle Ages sickened two people in China with pneumonic plague this month. In May, a Mongolian couple died from bubonic plague after eating the raw kidney of an infected rodent. But there are almost certainly more than four cases in the world. Anywhere from 1,000 to 2,000 people get the plague every year, the World Health Organization reported. But that total is likely too modest an estimate, since it doesn't account for unreported cases.

Why is bubonic plague still a thing?
