Trump kept it uncharacteristically brief at his press briefing Friday—and some Republicans hope that trend continues

At just 22 minutes long, Friday’s White House coronavirus briefing was the shortest yet, and a far cry from the two-hour marathon sessions of late. But perhaps more shocking than the duration was President’s refusal to take any questions from reporters, abruptly exiting after the vice president concluded his coronavirus updates. This comes on the heels of his bizarre musing Thursday aboutMediaite.

“Clearly the president was afraid of the serious questions he was about to be asked by the journalists who were there,” said Blitzer, noting that this is the first time he didn’t take questions from the press during the daily coronavirus briefings. Trump has seemed to relish having the opportunity, live on television, to bash the news media; indeed, “baiting and attacking reporters energized him” theearlier in the week.

The truncated presser on Friday may be a harbinger of things to come in the White House briefing room. Axiosthat the president plans to scale back his press conferences by either ceasing to appear daily and keeping his appearances more brief when he does attend. This advice comes from the president’s advisers—both inside and outside the White House—who are concerned that the president’s daily briefings have “overexposed” him and have hurt him politically against.

A source familiar with the internal deliberations noted that the lack of new information makes it hard to justify Trump’s daily appearances: “I mean, you wonder how we got to the point where you’re talking about injecting disinfectant?” Axios reports, per four sources with knowledge of the conversations, that talk of paring back the briefings were underway before Trump’s disinfectant comments, though the self-sabotaging aspect of the briefings does “finally seem to have dawned on Trump”...
