Most colleges that have chosen to hold in-person classes this semester are not conducting widespread testing of students for the coronavirus, an NPR analysis finds. And that raises concerns about potential new outbreaks when students are sent home.

, including many small private schools in New England, to provide regular coronavirus testing. Through that partnership, tests are $25 each. At the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where officials are using a saliva test they developed themselves to regularly test students and staff, individual tests are about $10, but given the frequency of testing, officials estimate they're spending about $1 million a week.

The lack of testing on campus is consistent even for colleges in COVID-19 hot spots, NPR's analysis found. About two-thirds of full-time undergraduates who attend a college in a hot spot county are on campuses that do not require routine or surveillance tests. One big reason for the wide disparities in testing approaches is the lack of clear information from the federal government on how to open colleges during the pandemic.

all education should be ended and dismantled. education will not be necessary in the new world that's about to come into existence. a new year zero is about to be born.

This is not gonna be a happy thanksgiving 🤦🏼‍♂️

Do not fear!

I’m very glad my daughter’s college is in the 6% that tests every week. So far all is well there. We’re grateful. Though there are parents who think the precautions are too much, stepping on ‘rights’. Ridiculous.

Yes just waiting for Covid to come my way...not only are they not aggressively testing, Texas Tech is not testing at all

Well then maybe the schools should provide rapid testing like they do for football. Get serious. If it was a real concern then these people wouldn't allow football to go on.

Wouldn't most of them be infected and developed immunity by the time the semester is over?

Real journalism would have included something like this Of 50 US universities reporting ~70,000 covid test results, only 3 hospitalizations were reported and zero deaths. What you do is propaganda and fear mongering

RheaBoydMD How can people be both highly educated and yet, so deeply ignorant? COVID19

Recovery rates, per CDC: 0-19: 99.997% 20-49: 99.98% 50-69: 99.50% Seems testing and other unnecessary precautions are NOT warranted. Save the money and test the staff who are older and have higher consequences. Weekly tests for anyone over 50 years old.

And some colleges are wasting resources by COERCING students who are in 100% distance learning classes & living away from campus to be tested, i.e. If remote learning students do not get tested by school's provider, they are threatened with suspension or expulsion.

csunorthridge - are you doing what’s necessary to protect students like me I hope so!

Yeah, they are following the lead of the trump administration. Tell America you're testing, but don't actually test. Very effective! BidenHarris2020ToSaveAmerica

Take a look at StOlafCollege in MN—-testing is ongoing, students pledged to be safe in behaviors, past mid-term now and learning is in full swing!

U of AL has stopped widespread testing, at the same time, students are getting much sicker than in early fall. More stories of post Covid encephalitis are also being shared on their FB parent pages. It’s worse than UA wants us to know, and I assume it’s the same on other campuses

Profits over people

Out of 70,000+ positive reported COVID-19 cases on Universities: 3 hospitalizations 0 deaths

We havent shut down ONCE yet. Fyi.

College kids here are out partying on the beach with no masks on. They seem to be doing fine.

That’s because it was more about money than peoples lives.

It’s b/c widespread testing of a student body is cripplingly expensive, especially for antigen testing.

Even If Trump Beats Covid-19, Long-Term Effects May Still LingerA Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study published in July found that 35% of U.S. adults had not returned to their usual state of health two to three weeks after testing positive for Covid-19, with one in five of the respondents being 18-34 year-olds with no chronic medical conditions. Media/Dems fear mongering for political purposes. You focus on cases as the 3 real issues are all declining i.e. 1. Hospitalization rate 2. Hospital capacities 3. Death rate They ignore 99.5+ recovery rate for those 0-69 & fact that just 6% of deaths are solely due to Covid19. hahahaha -- Forbes is every day more pathetic. Per CDC only 6% (12,600) of all 210,000 deaths were solely Covid19. 94% or197,400 deaths had comorbidities where deceased had severe medical illnesses. We dont know the exact impact of Covid which cld be none, meaningful or no diff than a cold or flu.

White House COVID-19 outbreak shows the limits of testing; even the most accurate ones can miss the coronavirus earlyA person might have such small traces of the virus after exposure a case isn't identified until days later, even using the most accurate and sensitive tests. Johns Hopkins researchers found that testing people for SARS-CoV-2 — the virus that causes COVID-19 — too early in the course of infection is likely to result in a false negative test, even though they may eventually test positive for the virus. coronavirus COVID19 99% survival rate!!
