Euphoria star Javon Walton opens up about the season 2 finale. Walton plays Ashtray in the HBO teen drama, which was created by Sam Levinson, and like all the characters, Ashtray had a busy ending to season 2. In the episode, titled “All My Life, My Heart Has Yearned for a Thing I Cannot Name,” Ash’s tendency to attack first and asks questions later proves to have consequences.
In an attempt to protect Fez, who is like an older brother to him, he locks himself in the bathroom and instigates a shootout with a SWAT team. Predictably, after plenty of pleading from Fez that Ash should put his weapons down and surrender, the SWAT team shoots and presumably kills Ash. Although a gunshot is heard, the camera focuses on Fez’s expression as this all unfolds. And while some viewers are already mourning the loss of Ash, Walton himself isn’t so ready to say goodbye.
There’s definitely hope for Ashtray to still be alive. Because if there’s somebody who could take a bullet in the show, it’s Ashtray. Ashtray is one badass kid. He’s not playing around. I believe he has a shot about being around for Season 3. Walton also mentions that, originally, it was Fez that was meant to be shot first. However, this was changed to Ash getting shot shortly before filming. This could be a sign that the Fez’s no-nonsense partner survived, which could be possible, since viewers never witness the shot and, conceivably, an entire SWAT team could disarm a terrified child without shooting him in the head.
In any case, regardless of Ash’s future, it’s a tragic development. The kid was never really raised by anyone, and like so many other Euphoria characters, he’s heavily influenced by what he sees in television and movies. On some level, he probably thought it would be cool and valiant to die in a shootout with the police. It’s something that should carry plenty of ramifications when the teen drama returns for more episodes.
