The European Union on Friday denounced a Chinese court's decision to send a human rights lawyer to prison, and called for his immediate release.
Yu Wensheng was sentenced on Wednesday to four years in jail, after having already spent more than two years in detention.statementThe statement added that Wednesday's decision represented a breach of Chinese law and international law, as the defendant was denied a fair trial and could not choose his own lawyer.
"The European Union expects China to ensure full respect of the rule of law, to establish fair trial guarantees and to investigate thoroughly all reported cases of arbitrary detentions, ill-treatment and torture of human rights defenders and their families," it said.
