The Christian Democrat, Socialist, Liberal and Green groups - in addition to the smaller Left group - issued a joint letter that criticized Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s government for rolling back rights for LGBTI people and curtailing other democratic principles. It also called on the EU’s executive Commission to hold back funds for Budapest until liberal democracy principles are met.
Over a dozen EU nations, including France and Germany, and EU institutions have already started court proceedings against Budapest for what they see as discriminatory LGBTI policies, outlining a fundamental rift within the 27-nation EU, where unanimity is often necessary to push policies through. Yet last Friday, in a rare display of dissenting views within Hungary’s government, president Katalin Novak sent a law back to parliament that would allow for the anonymous reporting of same-sex families.
