De cara a su temporada número 83, Santa Anita Park contará con este tipo de resonancia magnética en sus propias instalaciones. La nueva máquina fue instalada en el establo del hipódromo y es considerada la primera en su tipo. La máquina es operada por la Fundación de Equinos del Sur de California, la misma que opera el hospital de equinos en el establo.
Aunque MILE-PET ya se ha utilizado en el pasado en humanos por más de una década, es muy raro que los caballos se sometan a un escaneo de este tipo. “Lo realmente nuevo aquí es la resolución, recibimos un tipo de resolución mucho mayor que con la Tecnología Nuclear de Escaneo”, explicó el doctor Dowd. “El tipo de escaneo que tenemos ahora es de dos dimensiones, pero el nuevo MILE-PET permite tener imágenes tridimensionales”.
Por su parte, Spriet recordó que aún queda mucho trabajo por hacer, especialmente en los parámetros al momento de diagnosticar posibles lesiones de caballos.
