On Sunday, Dec. 7, 1941, the Rev. Harry Emerson Fosdick ascended to his study in the tower of Manhattan’s Riverside Church, where he broadcast his popular weekly radio program to listeners all over the country. He’d been traveling the Midwest, speaking out against any American participation in the war already underway in Europe, and he worried that his position at the church was growing tenuous because of his obdurate pacifism. His plan, if push came to shove, was to join the Quakers.
Japanese aviators sank American opposition to the war along with much of the U.S. Navy. Almost every member of the country’s robust and diverse antiwar movement changed their views overnight. “Perhaps no war has ever produced so many individuals who at one time or another in their lives had vowed never to fight again, and then with the first trumpets found reasons as to why this war was different,” wrote two pacifist historians.
