Fiancée of ESPN college football reporter Edward Aschoff says his sudden death at age 34 on Christmas Eve was actually caused by stage 4 non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, not pneumonia as doctors previously thought.

"After his passing, the hospital received the final results from his lung biopsy. Unbeknownst to us, Edward had stage 4, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in his lungs. This is an aggressive type of cancer that is usually undetectable until it is very advanced."last month that Aschoff was admitted to the hospital a week after being diagnosed with multifocal pneumonia.

"Both pneumonia and non-Hodgkins lymphoma can trigger HLH in the body and that is seemingly what happened with Edward,'' she wrote on Wednesday."All of this combined is what led to his very rapid decline those last few days, and ultimately his passing."that he was suffering from"multifocal pneumonia" after falling ill following his coverage of the annual football game between Michigan and Ohio State.

Learning the new information seemed to bring some comfort to Berteau. The two were set to be married in April. "It has helped me knowing that his passing was inevitable, and I’m at least grateful he didn’t have to go through the painful treatment and drawn out process of battling the disease,'' she wrote.

She also asked that donations be made to a scholarship fund in his name set up by Aschoff's alma mater, the University of Florida’s School of Journalism and Communications, to help aspiring journalists.

How did the doctors get that wrong

Earlier this year, a friend of mine went to the hospital to get checked out because he suddenly wasnt feeling well. A few hours later he was dead. He was walking around with pancreatic cancer and didnt even know it. No signs or warnings at all.

Thats really sad. He was so handsome for a black guy. I really hate to see good looking people die young....RIP

🥺

Oh dear. 💔🙏

I knew a doctor (!) who barely survived acute S4 leukemia. I had no idea that such a thing even existed

Had a friend in high school die suddenly from this. Thought he had pneumonia. He still attended basketball practice despite being very ill. He would just lie in the bleachers shivering with his coat on. A week later he was gone. Condolences to his family.

I am Truly Sorry 4 Everyone’s Loss / Condolences To His Fiancée And Family May He Rest In Peace and God Grant Grace And Mercy And Peace of Spirit and Mind to All those Mourning His Loss

My sister had Stage4 Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and survived. Been in remission 10 years. Sad if he was not diagnosed promptly.
