Erectile dysfunction can first emerge in a man as early as 40, according to the Massachusetts Male Aging Study on sexual dysfunction. About 30 million men are affected by erectile dysfunction, according to the National Institute of Health.

Smoking, excessive drinking, and drug abuse may damage the blood vessels and reduce blood flow to the penis. Smoking makes men with atherosclerosis even more vulnerable to erectile dysfunction.
