As"We Don't Talk About Bruno" continues to climb the ranks among all the top music charts, Encanto's creators are opening up about how the hit song came to be. Disney's Encanto released in theaters on November 24, 2021, and came to Disney+ on Christmas Eve 2021. The film follows Colombian teenager Mirabel Madrigal who navigates living with her extraordinary family as the only member to not receive a gift from the magic of the Encanto.
With a story filled with magic and Colombian influence and a soundtrack created by Hamilton composer Lin-Manuel Miranda, Encanto has been a huge hit among audiences. One piece of the film that has stuck firmly in the minds of fans is the song"We Don't Talk About Bruno." The Madrigals generally abstain from talking about their scorned future-predicting Uncle who mysteriously disappeared.
We could see Lin thinking, and he looked at us and said, ‘It feels like a spooky ghost story, like a spooky montuno.' And he turns to the piano and plays the first three chords. We literally saw him put it together and compose in that very moment. I’ve never had that happen before... We had to build this all from our imagination. What helped make this piece unique is that we had a group of Latinx dancers from Colombia, from Cuba, from Puerto Rico — people who understood the assignment.
The road to Bruno's song also involved the development of the character himself. Originally, Bruno was going to be younger and was going to be named"Oscar." However,"Oscar" was soon dismissed due to the number of Colombian's named Oscar Madriguel, leading the crew to send a list of potential names to Miranda.
"We Don't Talk About Bruno" has become Disney's biggest song since Frozen's"Let It Go," and rightly so. From a musical perspective, the song is quite impressive, by effectively piecing together very different tones and tunes from multiple characters. The song is also very relatable, as it pertains to family secrets and how years of gossip and repression can completely obscure the actual truth.
