The crew members, who remain healthy, will stay onboard the International Space Station...

The Soyuz MS-22 crew ship is shown as the International Space Station orbited 264 miles above Europe. This spacecraft was struck by a micrometeorite and will not carry crew home.An empty spacecraft will be launched to the International Space Station to bring home one NASA astronaut and two Russian cosmonauts, the U.S. and Russia announced Wednesday.

The damage was first detected and reported on Dec. 14. Cosmonauts Sergey Prokopyev and Dmitri Petelin were preparing for a spacewalk when ground teams noticed coolant leaking from the Soyuz spacecraft. So Russia is planning to launch an empty Soyuz in late February. The space station crew will move hardware, such as seat linings and spacesuits that are customized for each crew member, from the damaged spacecraft to the new spacecraft. The damaged spacecraft will then return to Earth, landing in Kazakhstan as planned, to bring home experiments and equipment.
