abruptly canceled a concert mid-show in New Zealand last week, and that was all it took for a tabloid to invent a ridiculous story claiming the legend will never sing again. The story is completely false.asserts that John’s “hard-partying past and illness” have “ravaged his voice.
The tabloid explains that John had surgery in 1987 on his vocal cords and acknowledges that John himself has admitted “he never fully recovered his full vocal range.” That much is true. Where the article goes off the rails is the absurd claim that “his history of cocaine abuse and bulimia may have ravaged his voice even further.” The supposed insider goes on to say, “This could spell the end of his career.
The truth is, John has been sober for almost three decades and the surgery was even longer ago. It’s ridiculous to think those things have anything to do with the pneumonia that caused his recent cancellation. Furthermore, the singer is retiring when his current tour is complete, so the tour is likely the end of his career, but not in the way the tabloid is painting it. Finally, and most damaging for the outlet, John has already resumed his tour.
Here is what really happened: midway through a show in Auckland, a visibly upset John informed the crowd that he couldn’t continue with his show. Heto apologize for the cancellation, writing, “I played and sang my heart out, until my voice could sing no more. I’m disappointed, deeply upset and sorry. I gave it all I had.” After a few days of bedrest, the “Candle In The Wind” singer
in Australia. He’s played four shows in the days since, and no other shows have been canceled. In fact, he’s even added dates to the British leg of the tour later this summer.
