While previous cryptocurrency scams tend to mimic verified Twitter users by creating accounts with similar handles, avatars, and cover photos, Wednesday’s scam was different in that the unknown hacker gained access to real accounts to proliferate their scam. The initial scam tweet promoting the fake giveaway from Musk’s account, which has nearly 37 million followers, went up at 1:17 p.m. PT.
Hacked accounts went on to pin tweets promoting the giveaway scam to the top of verified profiles or retweet the messages. Other accounts that were hit included those for Biden; rappers Kanye West, Wiz Khalifa, and the late XXXtentacion; boxer Floyd Mayweather; and billionaires Jeff Bezos, Mike Bloomberg and Warren Buffett.
The bitcoin wallet address associated with the scam showed transactions on Wednesday afternoon suggesting more than $60,000 worth of the cryptocurrency had been deposited in the wallet. It’s unclear if that money was from actual unsuspecting individuals or from the scammer themselves. Now-deleted tweets from the verified Twitter accounts of Joe Biden and Barack Obama promoted a Bitcoin giveaway scam on Wednesday afternoon.was created this afternoon, at 10:36 a.m. PT.

Hackers compromise Twitter accounts of Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Apple, others in crypto scamHackers apparently compromised Twitter Inc. accounts late Wednesday belonging to Tesla Inc.'s Elon Musk, Microsoft Corp. founder Bill Gates, Apple Inc. and others in an attempted cryptocurrency heist. Tesla and Twitter have yet to respond to requests for comment. A tweet, that was rendered inactive about 10 minutes after it went out, from Musk's account read "Feeling greatful [sic], doubling all payments sent to my BTC address! You send $1,000, I send back $2,000! Only doing this for the next 30 minutes." Tweets with a similar request went out on Bill Gates's account and Apple's never-used account and were taken down. According to CoinDesk, Twitter accounts for Gemini, Binance, KuCoin, Coinbase, Litecoin's Charlie Lee, Tron's Justin Sun, Bitcoin, Bitfinex, Ripple, Cash App, and CoinDesk, were also compromised. BitTorrent also confirmed the hacks and said it was working with Twitter to return its accounts to normal.
