Most consumers aren’t shopping for electric cars—and with gasoline prices relatively low, even hybrid models can be a tough sell

Car dealer Brad Sowers is spending money to prepare for the coming wave of new electric models from General Motors Co. He is installing charging stations, upgrading service bays and retraining staff at his St. Louis-area dealership to handle the technology-packed vehicles.

But when he considers how many plug-in Chevy Bolts he sold last year—nine, out of the nearly 4,000 Chevrolets sold at his Missouri dealerships—it gives him pause. “The consumer in the middle of America just isn’t there yet,” when it comes to switching to electric vehicles, he said, citing the long distances many of his customers drive daily and a

Great. Instead of less tailpipe emissions we'll blow off more mountaintops using diesel-powered equipment.

The oil industry funded author of this pile of words makes a very good point that no one shares.

They are expensive and the batteries are also an environmental hazard. We aren’t there yet.

That's why the price of gas has to go way up to make electric vehicles cost equal. Think about that. Hope you're not on a fixed income..

Pre-pandemic, I only drove about 12 miles a day. Unless my apartment has a charging station, it’s still inconvenient. I’d have to purposely drive to a location with one and spend HOURS waiting for my car to charge.

I'd drive an EV or hybrid if they weren't so expensive.

Let the US auto companies lobby the hell out of it. American is left behind by the World-Island already. EU and China are not looking back to the US dollar-bound oil.

EV’s are less efficient at higher speeds, charging network is non-existent, the cost of EV’s prohibitive and no one wants to sit around for another hour on a 14hr drive. Is it any wonder? Teslas were built in San Fransisco - not Cunnamulla. And it shows.

“People with horses are opposed to the motorcar “

A 100 miles is no good to anyone, electric still has a long way to go.

Key facts: Converting all US autos to EVs will require roughly: 18x world’s current cobalt production, 9x neodymium, 7x lithium, & 4x world copper production.

You all must be short Tesla

Sometime in the future, though. Like phones, you don't want your car to run out of energy in the middle of a road rage incident in L.A. Our wireless vacuum sucked. Constantly recharging. Also--isn't electricity produced by oil?

do they have 4WD? Can they pull my snowmobile/boat/trailer/camper? Do they fit a family of 6 with a dog? Until then, hard hard pass.

So right! We are not rushing out to buy. I haven’t seen a good liking EVEN yet! If they wanna sell cars to the masses start making a better looking ride!

To use the EV in priority is a kind of ESG investment by citizens.

The money I would use to buy an electric car is being siphoned off by a lazy deadbeat exwife who uses childsupport/our kids as a paycheck. If I didn't to have to pay the life sucking, soul stealing child support system, I'd have an electric & my kids would be investing in Tesla

The consumer in middle america is always 3-5 years behind the technological curve - cost is a real issue - but not a reason to reject electric vehicles - more a reason to justify investment in charging stations -

Don’t worry the one percent has decided that you will be gladly buying electric with carbon tax.The price will be so high you will be forced to make the change.

Il faut installer une auto-génératrice a partir des roues

Is NC in the middle of America?

Just wait till gas is 3.25 a gallon.

Electric hybrid just can't outperform conventional gas vehicles.

Electric vehicles are not for rural areas where there are few charging stations. Imagine running out of battery crossing Utah or New Mexico or Manitoba or Alberta. TorontoStar CBC

Try test driving or buying an EV. Wait times are sometimes 1 year. Dealers prefer to keep the ICE maintenance revenue. EVs are not as profitable for them. It's a supply not demand shortage.

Wilhelmdenni my investments With him has been so profitable and I would love to recommend him to everyone who is interested in boosting up their financial situation Wilhelmdenni

Now, maybe you could delve into the number of people who live in metropolitain areas vs those who live in rural areas. Hint: there's far more of the former than the latter. Far, far more.

Most importantly, they are ugly! Wth wants an ugly car?!?

Yes we are. I live in Missouri. We are ready. Price them so we can afford them.

I live in rural America. I drive 30 miles to work every day. I love my EV. There is nothing that would convince me to go back to the old technology. I NEVER HAVE TO BUY GAS. EVER. I don't have to worry about the muffler, the transmission, getting oil changes. Heaven.

I drive a PHEV hybrid sedan and I love it. My next one will be a PHEV or EV SUV-type.

If Tesla can give me 600 mile range I only need a charging station 2 or 3 times a year.

I have a 100 mile one way commute in Minnesota. I will be trading in my hybrid for either a PHEV or full electric. The infrastructure is there for these to be a viable option for people in rural America to buy, the problem is dealers won't stock them.

Not what the numbers say. There is a huge shift to EV adoption. Tesla being the leader is tech battery AI etc, then other legacy will roll out evs as well. This will change consumer behaviour. Follow the $

as usual, rural v urban, with the cities shoving things down everyone else's throats--everyone else being all the people who either never want to live in a city or left the city.

The individual who patents a suitcase sized light weight portable electrical car recharger that one can carry along in the vehicles trunk is going to make a ton of money.

I am not sure why hybrids would be a tough sell. The fuel portion eliminates range anxiety.

I would prefer a Hybrid.

as they shouldn’t, electric cars outside an urban environment are full fugking ruhtard

Where are gas prices relatively low?

Takes 15-30 minutes to charge the thing... People don't have that kind of time... plus, there aren't that many charging stations around.

batteries electric_cars

People have been working for centuries for people to have good cities towns and villages . . . We are all sons and daughters . Same sex marriages messes the place . Abortion is sadness .

If I wasn't on disability and had no savings and no emergencies right now, I'd seriously consider a used electric. But it will be awhile before any of these things aren't so for me. Hopefully next year.

This is shaping up to be Kodak film vs digital all over again.

don't worry biden will ban drilling which will drive gas prices top for consumers and make EVs more attractive

Faster to fuel up a vehicle with full tank than to have to wait while charging an EV especially when traveling long distance. EVs might find buyers if priced about 30K out the door and that will never happen, ever.

The 45 minutes to charge them is a time killer

электромобили это фикция, для лохов...

Over time, families with 2 cars will have one electric and one gas. Need a long haul vehicle. Electric good for around town but limited otherwise by infrastructure and battery limitations.

Call it wisdom of the crowds

I will buy when they have a convertible model I like thats affordable and can go close 800 miles a charge.

You can't electrify gas design autos and expect range. That wind resistance wall at 60 mph will drain the battery: Range anxiety. True electric auto design. Aptera: 1,000 mile range.

Most demand will be in large urban centres, not middle of nowhere butt counties. Jeezus Lol. The wave is here, gov’ts will be investing in infrastructure where it makes sense.

Gasoline prices are low lol 😂

Dealers hate them - little to no maintenance

They are super expensive to have worked on and not reliable for commuters. I had a hybrid 10 years ago and I will never ever but an electric car. I'll keep all my gas powered vehicle running until the day that I die!

...because they are WAY too expensive up front.

IMPRACTICAL oppressive stress wasting time on long re.charge with minimal travel

Support BIAFRA right to freedom

Gas prices sky rocketed in WA!!! We’re so addicted to gas stations we don’t even realize our cars are parked, stationary at home or at work 90% of the time. Right there’s your built in camouflage infrastructure. Carbon tax to fund tax credits for EV sales and charging stations.

Hey! WE DON'T HAVE ANY MONEY!!!

That tune will change when B iui den kills the energy sector. Back to candles and horses.

EV or EC may be, but we wonder whether WSJ and all readers of other publications are aware of 'Blue Gas'? This will compete and beat all EVs or ECs as Blue Gas cars will be more affordable, without any emission, give much more mileage and will be virtually maintenance free. Chk.

Not until the cost comes down. Nobody want to pay the premium for EV. BC and QC have great EV sales and make up most of the purchases. They as well provide a provincial rebate to add to the federal rebate.

The closest dealers to me are ~25 miles away. None of them carry electric cars. Why? Very little after-the-sale service revenue to be had. Oil changes? Nope. Tune ups? Nope. Even brakes last longer with regenerative braking.

Yes please.👍🏻

The infrastructure for electric cars isn’t available yet.

Um how is gas low? To a millionaire sure but I think you're way out of touch here..

Think again. ICE vehicles are on their way out. Gas prices have risen immensely and why would anyone want to keep polluting the air

I'm guessing this article was written several months ago when prices were low? In California prices are now around $4/gal.! If oil companies continue to manipulate prices, people will look to EV's opec

I'm sure it has nothing to do with the billions of dollars of oil subsidies handed out by the government.

Where do you live Prices are jumping up every day.

Gas prices relatively low. joebiden has entered the chat.

Not surprised. Dealers don’t want to be bothered with them. They don’t care to learn about the vehicles. Dealers are going to be the death of the companies plans for these vehicles.

I see them on the road everyday. I'd buy one if I could afford a high clearance SUV. Can't drive low clearance vehicles on a dirt road daily Hopefully soon they will meet my need and price range. I am so ready for one.

It's over $4 a gallon for gas in Northern California right now. cheapgas lol

Biden want a Big business. They colocate problem now want a Big business for your pocket with stimuli who is more rich You No. People seeing Netflix and waiting Easy money while banks and politicans Buy back shares. Silent people but rich are more rich

Biden will fix that!!!! Insane gas prices are right around the corner!

Don’t worry. Biden is hard at work fixing the “problem” of low gas prices.

Yangon, Myanmar Footage shows military shooting gun and blowing sound bomb in the hospital compound. People cannot live peacefully because military doing such kind of terrorist actions. WarCrimes ResponsibilityToProtect WhatsHappeningInMyanmar

Tried to buy an electric car earlier this year. NO dealer except on the east coast had them, and dealers laughed us out of dealerships. There are people out there who want them, but we can’t get them.

The true price of gas is not reflected in its price. It's a market failure.

Relatively low?

It s 10pm in Yangon but armed troops opening fire into air for many times n kidnapping people in almost every township of Yangon. Seems like Residents have to switch off the light n stay quiet all night frightenedly. Mar7Coup WhatsHappeningInMyanmar
