Daily News | Eighth wonder: One big inning rallies Phillies past Mets, 5-4

Alec Bohm had already made two errant throws en route to three overall Monday night when he went to his left, fielded a grounder, and threw accurately to first base to record an out in the second inning.First, though, let’s acknowledge Bohm’s role in the Phillies’ stirring come-from-behind 5-4 victory over the New York Mets at Citizens Bank Park.

There was no way to hide Bohm’s weaknesses against the Mets. His defense at third base has been charitably labeled by manager Joe Girardi as a “work in progress,” and he had eight balls hit in his general direction through four innings. Amateur lip-readers slowed the video as though it was the Zapruder film to decipher whether Bohm said, “I hate those plays,” or “End this, please,” or gulp, “I hate this place.” And while ultra-sensitive fans may find the latter to be unforgivable, it doesn’t really matter what Bohm said because his frustration was both plain and entirely reasonable.

It’s premature to suggest a similar fate awaits Bohm if his defense doesn’t improve. But with Stott and Camargo receiving time at third base, it’s worth wondering whether Bohm would be better served playing every day in triple A.When the Phillies acquired Nick Nelson in a four-player trade with the New York Yankees in November, team officials were intrigued by the right-hander’s fastball-changeup combination.
