The cosmic monster lurks at the center of our home galaxy: a supermassive black hole dubbed Sagittarius A* .in our galaxy. “What we’re seeing now is that there are strong, twisted, and organised magnetic fields near the black hole at the centre of the Milky Way galaxy,” said Sara Issaoun, NASA Hubble Fellowship Program Einstein Fellow at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian. The images of Sgr A* and M87’s black hole revealed certain similarities, which surprised scientists. The scientists studied Sgr A* in polarized light.
This results in the creation of a polarization pattern on the light produced by the surrounding hot gas. The polarization pattern is perpendicular to the magnetic field lines.“By imaging polarized light from hot glowing gas near black holes, we are directly inferring the structure and strength of the magnetic fields that thread the flow of gas and matter that the black hole feeds on and ejects,” said Angelo Ricarte, Harvard Black Hole Initiative Fellow and project co-lead.
