Egypt is committed to using diplomacy to resolve a crisis with Ethiopia over its construction of a giant hydroelectric dam on the Blue Nile, President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said on Saturday, addressing stalled talks on the issue.

The talks were halted once again on Wednesday, this time only about a fortnight before the expected start-up of the $4 billion Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, which is being built near Ethiopia’s border with Sudan and is the centrepiece in its bid to become Africa’s biggest power exporter.

“When we moved to the Security Council... that was we are always keen to take the diplomatic and political path until its end,” Sisi said in a speech at an air force base. Egypt, which is almost entirely dependent on the Nile for its fresh water supplies, is anxious to secure a legally binding deal that would guarantee minimum flows and a mechanism for resolving disputes before the dam starts operating.

Sisi and diplomatic don't go together

The 'crisis' is stand held by the Egypt politicians, not the GERD. Even if the entire world stands against us for being very fair for Egypt, we'll fill the dam, EthiopiaNileRights, FILLTHEDAM. Sooner, we'll see how the world would judge on the issue.

🇪🇹🇪🇹 ItIsMyDam we will fill it soon!!

Deal or no deal it is the right time to start the filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

Ethiopia trying to steal Egypt share in river Nile because of what they're trying to convince them self with; they are building their country. Stealing Egyptian share is not the right solutions. I'm totally sure that Egypt will do its best in diplomatic ways then the force!

DrSenait Lessons from history Egipt meaning of diplomacy is ' let me have all ' , they are too selfish and unfair for other country interests , they are not trustworthy for Arab nations let alone Ethiopia

DrSenait centrepiece in its bid to become Africa’s biggest power exporter. Really? U r painting it as development Vs life? Not cool

No one will let you dictate anything but cooperation. EthiopiaNileRights GERD FillTheDam Ethiopia ElectrcicityForAllEthiopians

Genuine diplomacy is the only solution on GERD. Swinging between UNSC and negotiations is not diplomacy. Filling the dam is part of the construction, not the negotiation. Ethiopians are tired of living under darkness and poverty. ItIsMyDam EthiopiaNileRights NileNaturalRight

The only way!

They are trying to waste our time by going back and forth. A selfish country will never flourish! Egypt will never succeed by orchestrating a selfish strategy! No power will stop us from realizing our growth and prosperity! EthiopianNileRights GERD itsmydam

It is hard to believe Sisi, they are playing different games at the same time. Egyptians are always doing something behind against what they say in front. They should stop their selfishness and be fair enough!

DrSenait Good! Negotiation and cooperation is the only way forward.

That is the right way for egypt

Ethiopia's threat to AlsisiOfficial is handled peacefully... And peaceful Lybia is being attacked but this miniature dictator... The shortest dictator ever!

We Ethiopians know that the only option Egypt has is to fairly negotiate with Ethiopia, by stopping its nonsense colonial era rhetoric. We also recognize that, right now, Trump is the most threat for Ethiopia than Egypt does. US wants to substitute the 1929 Britain. No way!!

DrSenait Diplomacy or not, Ethiopia's military is ready too. We will not be fooled. Fillthedam EthiopianBlueNileRights

DrSenait Yeas sis that's onlly our choce

DrSenait Like they have other options 🙄

Sisi is a little child who cannot do anything

DrSenait That's the right way!! EthiopianBlueNileRights

DrSenait Ethiopia is also committed to a negotiated settlement ofthe Nile river based on reasonable share. Diplomacy is the only way.

isnt sis a soldier? what he know about diplomacy?

DrSenait Egypt already ordered army to Libya's border. Not so much 'committed to a diplomatic solution.'

Yeah but he is not committed to a diplomatic solutions when it comes to libya, hes trying to distract his people from his failure of handling the coronavirus crisis in egypt, and his support of haftar has gone with the wind, and in few years egypt will be thirsty to death.

But not to the crisis in Libya ?

No Egypt is a corrupt power broker and they can never be trusted...AlsisiOfficial has poor records on conventional agreements and counter- insurgency that are related to post conflict reconstruction processes within the sub-saharan region....nothing good from Egypt.
