PRINCE (Derek Prince): The Biden administration wants to have minimum staffing mandates for nursing homes, but that is easier said than done, writes Derek...

Texas Woman's University nursing students give chest compressions to a CPR manikin. In lieu of mandates, we need to invest in the expansion of educational pipelines that incentivize nurses and encourage students to see long-term care as a long-term profession.I agree that it’s time to change the way we care for our country’s seniors. However, implementing a “one size fits all” mandatory staffing requirement for nursing homes is not the change we need.

Providers unable to meet staffing mandates would have no choice but to deny new patients, close units or entire facilities, creating access to care issues and further travel for loved ones, particularly in rural communities. Consistent and well-trained staff are critical to providing the level of patient care that nursing home residents need.

In lieu of mandates, we need to invest in the expansion of educational pipelines that incentivize nurses and encourage students to see long-term care as a long-term profession. We need to invest additional funding that creates the ability for rural and urban providers alike to compete for the best staff.
