Experts give many reasons. A big one is that younger people, who generally haven’t bought homes or put down roots, are less likely to vote — and Texas is a very young state.
“These kids are very active, but they are active in social media,” Cortina said. “They’re good digital citizens but the problem is that we don’t see the step in terms of getting them out to vote.” When the political science professor talked with his students about the seeming lack of enthusiasm, he said there was just a feeling of disconnect, perhaps a rejection of the hyper-polarized rhetoric in politics. “It’s not entirely their fault,” he said.
So what could? How about a more direct democracy: letting people choose from a menu of policy proposals on the ballot rather than a menu of candidate names, many of them unfamiliar to the average voter. But Texas shouldn’t be proud of being on the other end of the spectrum. For a state rich in liberty-loving individuals who celebrate self-reliance and limited government, we sure do delegate a lot to the government. If democracy were milk, Texas’ would be 2 percent.
