By showing cities and states how they can help this wayward group get work permits, Denver can help with their employee shortages and save Denver taxpayers money.

Young Venezuelan migrant Thiago Caldera, 6, plays on his phone while his parents Willians {cq} Caldera, and Alejandra Guerrero get help from Volunteer Nina Frias to begin the work permitting process at a local hotel in Denver on Feb. 5, 2024. Migrants coming to Denver from Venezuela had all sorts of careers in their native country, but when they make it to the United States they have to start from scratch. Getting work authorization could take months if not years.

Those arriving today also don’t qualify forWe buy into the idea that it’d be better to support fewer families while helping them file their complex legal cases and get work permits than to house thousands for 14 days and kick them out without a viable path to employment.

Some refugees and migrants might go to family and friends who can support them and pay for their asylum cases to be filed, or to employment that occurs illegally outside of our federal tax system in other cities and states. Texas Gov. Gregg Abbott meanwhile has greeted the vacuum of federal control and care for refugees with indifference and his own political aspirations. Abbott has bused thousands of refugees to the places Trump labeled “sanctuary cities” like Denver, New York and Chicago. We cannot blame him for moving migrants along, but we wish he’d taken less of a malicious approach.US changes how it categorizes people by race and ethnicity.

We know there are places in America with ethical leaders who will step up and meet Johnston’s call, using their own city’s resources to get these refugees on their feet while they wait years for their asylum cases to be processed.
