in coming weeks to buy medical supplies, including 200 million medical-grade face masks a month.
“We decided to step back from all of that and say, look, as a nation-state with the capacity to write a check for hundreds of millions, no billions, of dollars, we’re in a position to do something bold and big that could be a catalyst to increase supply and ultimately increase the capacity,” Newsom said Wednesday during his daily pandemic briefing.
It’s outrageous that the state finds itself in this position; it’s beyond obvious that the federal government is in the best position to procure the mass quantities of gear needed to respond to what is a global healthcare crisis. But this isn’t the first time California has gone its own way when the federal government failed to provide forward-thinking leadership or adopted policies contrary to the Golden State’s interests, such as those on fuel-emission standards, immigration and healthcare.
Now that California is stepping into the leadership vacuum to help itself and other states access medical supplies and protective equipment, it should do the same when it comes to COVID-19 testing. Trump’s coronavirus task force is reportedly mulling a national strategy for conducting widespread diagnostic testing and using a different type of screening to identify people who are immune from COVID-19, two steps that are absolutely essential for the country to be able to get back to work. But after months of the administration’s dithering, backtracking and mixed messaging on its pandemic response, we don’t have faith that it will be able to manage the next phase competently.
opinion That is the way this country was designed. Federal government is backup. Called federalism. Your spin reads as intentionally divisive and harmful during these difficult times. LA Times not part of solution.
opinion This handsome man....Nancy P.. SON
opinion I agree. Trump is dumpster fire who fucks everything up anyway.
opinion
opinion Yes, it's great that a few states are spearheading a COVID2019 response But We need all states to tackle it because it's those Trump sympathetic states that'll remain reservoirs of the virus.
opinion It's nice to see the LA Times embrace federalism for once. Didn't realise the editorial board became so 'right wing'. Next you will be pushing for convention of states
opinion Thanks to the fact that GOP and realDonaldTrump have no control over CA our Governor is leading and showing the Nation how it's done. Keep Trump and the rest of the asshole Republicans away, they can help the red states; or maybe the can't and will need CA to help them as well.
opinion What a fine swamp type editor. Won’t even put his name on this! Fake news!
opinion First to complain. All they did was sit on their ass and say were waiting until we get federal funds! No leadership or ambition here! Quit if you don’t want to run your state. You can start your fixing your homeless, crime, illegals, trashed environment, criminal activity, etc...
opinion Newsom can continue to destroy jobs and lives.
opinion That is how NEMS ( National Emergency Management System) works , the States and Governors remain in control of the decisions for their States.
opinion Ungrateful
opinion if he thinks stats are are their own he needs to return those ventilators he was given
